Description

What kind of steel are handcuffs made of?
Handcuffs may be manufactured from various metals, including carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminum, or from synthetic polymers.

Why are handcuffs different colors?
This is actually common practice. Jails/corrections departments will color their cuffs so none of the arresting officers from other agencies accidently walk out with them. Vice versa for other departments as well. I’ve seen orange and red cuffs as well.

What are modern handcuffs made of?
Handcuffs | Security, Restraint & Law Enforcement | Britannica
Most modern handcuffs are made of steel, adjustable to the wrist size, and equipped with an automatic locking device. Disposable handcuffs of nylon are now available; their advantage is that a police officer can easily carry several pairs, for example, at the scene of a riot.

How to keep handcuffs from rusting?
We recommend using a teflon based oil. Apply liberally making sure the oil has worked into the locking mechanism, double lock hole and single strand pivot area. After lubricating remove all excess oil from handling surfaces so the restraints are not slippery. A damp handcuff case can also lead to rusting.

How long do handcuffs last?
Handcuffs are supposed to be a one time buy, wouldn’t you think? This means that once you purchase a pair of handcuffs, and use them under normal operational conditions, they should last you a 20-year career. However, we have found that there are a few things that limit the handcuffs of today from accomplishing that.

Do handcuffs go on front or back?
In most situations handcuffs should be applied with the hands behind the person’s back. Handcuffs will be double-locked to prevent tightening, which may cause undue discomfort or injury to the hands or wrists.

Do handcuffs tighten?
Double locking is especially important for the transport phase of an arrest; once a subject is put into the back seat, if the handcuffs are not double locked, the bows will most definitely tighten when they are seated. Activation of the double lock completes the restraint application process.
