Description

Golf divot tools are one or two-pronged tools that are used to repair golf ball pitch marks on the green that are caused by forceful impacts from long distances out. The farther away a golf ball is hit from, the larger the pitch mark (commonly called a divot) will be.

Do golfers actually use divot tools?
These divots need repairing to keep the course in good condition, so golfers are encouraged to carry a divot tool with them, so they can repair the divots they see. Divot repair is an everyday part of a greenkeeper’s job, and players may also make plenty of repairs on the putting green.

Can you use a tee as a divot tool?
While the USGA writes that it is completely fine to use a tee to fix a ball mark, you’ll find that using a divot tool will be much more effective and efficient. The additional surface area and two-prong structure on most divot tools will help you fix even the deepest ball marks in a matter of seconds.

What are the divot rules?
Before dropping a ball to take relief, a player must not replace a divot in a divot hole in the relief area or take other actions to alter the ground surface in a way that improves the conditions affecting the stroke.

Why do they call it a divot tool?
Divot tools are used to repair the grass on the golf course. Often, when golfers play, they brush the grass with their clubs, and this can leave scrapes, and when golf balls land on the short grass on the putting greens, it can leave an indentation. This damage is known as ‘divots’.

Should you take a divot when chipping?
Instead of taking a chunky divot, you want to catch the golf ball cleanly with no turf to boost friction, spin, and control. Generating enhanced friction on chip shots prompts your golf ball to spin higher and check up rapidly. As a result, you can attack the flag on short chip shots and enjoy quick bite.

What should your golf divot look like?
What your golf divots can teach you about your swing
A general rule is that every divot should resemble a bacon strip. This means there’s little digging into the turf, and that both the inside and outside edges should have a similar depth. Anything too deep will result in a poor strike.

Can you take a golf ball out of a divot?
My ball landed on a detached divot. Do I get a free drop …
As you suspect, an attached divot isn’t a loose impediment, so there’s no free relief on offer for this rather comical calamity. Your pal must either play the ball as it lies — near impossible, apparently — or, if the ball is in the general area, take unplayable ball relief under Rule 19 for one penalty stroke.
