The 3 means that your target will appear three times closer as compared to viewing with the naked eye. The 9 also represents how much closer your target will appear, so you can adjust to increase magnification if necessary. The 40MM is the lens diameter measured in millimeters.
3-9×40 scopes are good for hunting or shooting close-range targets out to 60 yards. 3-9x scopes have a short magnification range of 3x the widest view, and thus are inexpensive to produce and are the most common cheap scope included in bundles with a rifle.
Is 40 or 50 mm scope better?
40mm or 50mm: Which Riflescope Should You Choose?
This also applies to hunts in difficult terrain, such as hiking in the mountains or backcountry conditions; the 40mm riflescope is better for wide open areas, with lesser parallax and greater field depth.
What distance is a 3x scope good for?
The target would appear three times larger and closer just by the enlargement made by the 3x magnification scope, meaning the target would seem to be just 33 yards away. This makes it easier to aim and recognize details on the target among the other objects in that environment.
How far should a scope be from your eye?
Proper Eye Relief on a Rifle Scope – Warne Scope Mounts
Most manufacturers will note the eye relief distance. Most modern scopes have generous eye relief, usually around 3 – 5 inches, giving you plenty of mounting space. Higher magnification, older and rimfire scopes may have less eye relief.
Do rifle scopes hold their value?
Millions of rifles are in circulation, and they are used for everything from recreational shooting to home defense. What you may not realize is that used rifle scopes do not lose all their value. They retain value, and if you aren’t using or don’t want an older optic that you purchased for your rifle, you can sell it.
